2016 Track Meet Contributions

At last Wednesday’s meeting, our board unanimously recommended, and our membership unanimously approved, the following contributions to be made from this year’s track meet proceeds: $6000 for track scholarships, $2000 to Strelitz Diabetes Center, $4000 to Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center, $500 to Tigers track team, $500 to Camp Too Sweet, $250 to Good Neighbors Fund, and $1000 to travel and lodging for International Convention.
Just like last year, if we have receipts that are well above these sums, we will revisit these totals with board and membership with an eye toward increasing our giving.

51st Annual Cosmopolitan Invitational Track & Field Meet

The 51st Annual Cosmopolitan Invitational Track and Field Meet will be held at William Fleming High School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 28, 29 & 30, 2016. The track meet, which is officially sanctioned by the Virginia High School League, has become the largest scholastic track meet in Southwest Virginia with boys’ and girls’ teams participating from Middle, Junior and Senior High Schools throughout our area.  Cosmo 2016 will include athletes from 37 area schools this year with a total expected participation of over 1,500 students.

The Meet is in its fifth year back where it began.  The First Annual Cosmopolitan Invitational Track & Field Meet was held on Saturday, May 7, 1966 at William Fleming High School.  There were 4 schools in the field: Addison High School, Jefferson High School, Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School.  The Meet attracted 115 boys for 15 events and was won by William Fleming.

The Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke will award $3000.00 scholarships to an outstanding senior boy and girl participating in this year’s meet.  Including this year’s scholarships, the Club has awarded over $66,000 in scholarships since 2000.

Cosmo 2016 gets underway at 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon with Middle School Track & Field events.  Junior and Senior Division track and field events will be held at William Fleming on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m.  Competition resumes at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning at Fleming when the Senior field events begin.  Track events finals for Middle Schools and Junior & Senior Divisions will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The Parade of Athletes marches at 11:00 a.m. Saturday followed by running events for all scholastic divisions.  Gordon Thornton and Jim Behrens, two past Cosmo Club Presidents and long-time Meet Directors and volunteers, will serve as our Grand Marshalls.

Closing Award Ceremonies are expected to conclude by 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students.  There is no charge for preschoolers and parking is free.
